Contemporary fiction rooted in land, memory, and lived Cornwall
CORNWALL - BEYOND THE POSTCARD AND BEYOND NOSTALGIA
The Cornish Writer is a space for attention.

Cornwall is often written as scenery; dramatic, beautiful, consumable. This site exists to write it as something else: a lived landscape, shaped by labour, weather, silence, and time. A place that resists easy narratives, and rewards patience.

I am David I. Hughes, a novelist writing contemporary fiction rooted in West Cornwall. My work explores how memory settles into land, into stone, sea, and the remnants of industry and how those traces surface, quietly and persistently, in the present. Before writing fiction, I worked in marketing and brand strategy and latterly, photography; both taught me how easily meaning is imposed, and how rarely we pause to listen.

Here, I write occasional essays on place, craft, and attention, alongside reflections that sit at the edges of my novels. These pieces are not guides or histories. They are attempts to look carefully, to stay with what is seen, and to allow the landscape to speak without being explained away.

This is Cornwall beyond the postcard.
Not myth, not nostalgia; but presence.
